G.I. Joe: Retaliation commanded the top spot at the weekend box office.
Jon Chu’s long-delayed sequel managed to make an tidy $51.7 million since its debut on Thursday. The film’s three-day total currently stands at $41.2 million . The film still outperformed its competition when its Thursday figures are removed from the equation.
Although G.I. Joe: Retaliation made quite a bit of money in the US, the $150 million action flick did extremely well in foreign markets. The sequel brought in an additional $80.3 million from theaters overseas. Paramount is looking at an international total of approximately $132 million .
These numbers are certainly good news for the studio. Paramount execs took a gamble on the project by yanking it from the release schedule last year. The film was weeks away from hitting theaters at the time.
In an effort to improve the film for audiences, Chu and company added additional scenes with White House Down star Channing Tatum. Judging from the numbers the movie posted over Easter weekend, it would seem the risk is paying off.
The animated DreamWorks comedy The Croods proved popular with families over the past three days. Although the flick faced stiff competition from Dwayne Johnson and company, the feature made an estimated $26.6 million. This was enough for it to overpower this weekend’s other new releases at the box office.
Tyler Perry’s Temptation had a strong performance at the box office this weekend. The latest drama from the prolific writer, director, and playwright managed to score $22 million in ticket sales. Since the film is rumored to have a budget of less than $20 million, it’s safe to say that Perry has yet another hit on his hands.
The teen-oriented science fiction flick The Host debuted in sixth place with $11 million. While the movie was based on a novel by Twilight mastermind Stephenie Meyer, the film didn’t make a huge dent at the box office. The modestly-budgeted $40 million flick could very easily make up the difference on home video.
