Former Scottish first minister Alex Salmond has launched a scathing attack against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. In the biggest attack yet against Donald Trump from a British politician, Salmond warned voters against electing Trump, branding him as an “emotionally stunted manchild” who presents “a real and present danger to the security of the American people.”
According to the Guardian , Alex Salmond’s comments about Donald Trump come as a result of his time working with Trump over a controversial golf course near Aberdeen. Salmond said the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency “should give us all the heebie-jeebies.” The former first minister of Scotland continued to lambast Donald Trump, saying that he’s still unsure if Trump’s attacks on immigrants and Muslims are politically calculated or if he genuinely holds racist views.

Writing in the Daily Record newspaper, Salmond said, “It is a matter of debate as to whether it is more comforting to believe that a candidate says disgusting things not because he believes them but because he thinks they might benefit him in a campaign”. The Scottish politician, who was the first minister between 2007 and 2014, continued his scathing attack by likening Trump’s campaign to that of 1964 Republican candidate Barry Goldwater. He further cited attack ads used by the Democrats, which said: “In your guts you know he’s nuts.”
As the MSP for Gordon, the constituency around Donald Trump’s Scottish estate, Salmond assisted the property tycoon in building what was described as “the world’s greatest golf course.” However, the pair’s partnership fell apart when Trump attacked Salmond’s decision to experiment with small wind farms off the coast of Scotland.
Salmond continued by discussing his dealings with Trump whilst building the golf course, saying, “Indeed in the course of a single phone call he would veer alarmingly from bonhomie to bullying, to pleading and then back to a jocular mood. Emotionally he is a Peter Pan – the boy who never grew up.”
Salmond went on to remind American voters that if Trump could have such heated arguments over a few wind turbines, imagine what he’d be like with the country’s full nuclear arsenal at his fingertips.

Salmond became the first minister of Scotland in 2007 after the Scottish National Party gained enough seats to command a majority in the Scottish Parliament. Salmond’s leadership eventually lead to a referendum being held on Scottish independence from the United Kingdom. However, when a majority of voters chose to remain as part of the union, Salmond resigned as leader of SNP and first minister, with his deputy Nicola Sturgeon succeeding him.
Since his resignation, Alex Salmond has remained active as a Member of Parliament representing Gordon, whilst his party has continued its pursuit of independence following the result of the country’s European referendum.

British politicians have, so far, had something of a patchy relationship with Republican candidate Donald Trump. According to the Telegraph , Donald Trump has had something of a frosty relationship with London Mayor Sadiq Khan since his election in May this year. When Trump suggested imposing a ban on all Muslims entering the United States, he said he’d make an exception for the new mayor, who is of Muslim descent. Expectedly, Mr. Khan brushed away Donald Trump’s efforts to amend their relationship, saying that he hoped the Republican candidate was soundly beaten in November’s election.
It would be more than fair to say that British politicians have been largely hostile towards Donald Trump’s candidacy in this presidential race.
