Now that former WWE superstar Phil “CM Punk” Brooks has signed on with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), just about every middleweight UFC fighter wants to be the first to fight him. Now the latest person to throw his name into the ring (so to speak) is former Green Power Ranger Jason David Frank, Fox Sports is reporting.
UFC president Dana Brooks tells Fox Sports that since Brooks has little MMA experience, his first fight will likely be someone who also has little to no MMA experience. Enter Jason David Frank, who is also new to the MMA scene.
“I have to do this and wake up the UFC. I like CM. This is just a professional call out again. This is my life and I deserve a shot at this.”
The former Green Power Ranger, now 41, has a 1-0 record as a professional MMA fighter, according to Bleacher Report , and a 3-0 record in mixed martial arts as an amateur. He’s been fighting off and on, professionally and as an amateur, since 2010, but film commitments and personal appearances have kept him from pursuing a full-time career in MMA.
Frank’s manager, Brian Butler, says that Frank has been wanting to fight CM Punk for some time, but now that he (Punk) has signed a contract, the time is right.
“Jason’s actually been kind of toying with the idea of fighting CM Punk for over a year now. They toured together on the Wizard World conventions and they were doing appearances together and the fans were kind of talking about it and it got some buzz about a year ago. It never really died down, but with the announcement last night it flared back up… I got a text message from Jason right away saying ‘he wants to fight at middleweight, too, I’d love to do it, he got away from me’ just kind of joking around. But actually it makes a lot of sense.”
As for Punk, he hasn’t specifically addressed Frank’s challenge. In fact, since he signed with UFC yesterday, he hasn’t mentioned any specific opponents at all.
“I’m 35. I never competed in martial arts, so who’s to say if I would be good or not. I really think there’s a chance, but I’m mainly just saying so I can read people talk s**t on message boards.”
As of this post, there has been no official word on who will be CM Punk’s first UFC opponent — Jason David Frank or anyone else.
