In a truly touching tribute to his Mom on Mother’s Day, Eminem dropped a Spike Lee directed video, “Headlights,” in which he raps “But I love you, Debbie Mathers, oh, what a tangled web we have…”
The often acrimonious relationship between Marshall Mathers and his mother, Debbie Mathers, has often served as both fodder for his rap content, as well as fuel for the news outlets since he became a rap star.
Debbie filed a $10 million lawsuit against her son in 1999, accusing him of slander. The suit was settled in 2001 for $25,000.
On his 2002 “Cleanin’ Out My Closet, “he refers to her as a “selfish b****” and went on to claim that he hoped she would “burn in hell.”
But, Eminem is rapping a new tune today:
Did I take it too far? “Cleaning Out My Closet” and all them other songs But regardless I don’t hate you ’cause, Ma, You’re still beautiful to me, ’cause you’re my mom
On his Facebook page, Eminem posted a link to the video and thanked director Spike Lee. “Thank you Spike Lee for directing this video for me. Happy Mother’s Day,” he wrote.
The video, shot through the eyes of his mother , features vintage pictures of a “pre-Slim Shady” as well as a heartfelt scene where she attempts to visit her son but is turned away from the guards at the gate. The video was shot on location in Detroit.
Eminem titled the song, from his “MMLP2” album, “Headlights” because as she drove away from their last meeting he became fixated on the headlights of her car as he dealt with feelings of “overwhelming sadness.”
Although Eminem and his Mom are still estranged from one another, we can only hope that this mends the broken bonds. It’s a step in the right direction to be sure.
Have you called your Mom today?
