Elvis Hair, Michael Jackson Notebook, Sold For Big Bucks At Auction

Memorabilia from stars like Madonna, Whitney Houston, Elvis Presley, and Michael Jackson recently hit the block at the Music Icons and Sports Legends auction by Julien’s Auctions. A lock of Elvis’ hair, the King of Pop’s handwritten lyrics, and Madonna’s lingerie were among the big ticket items.

Michael Jackson – The auction occurred on the third anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death which may have helped with some of the sales. Jackson’s handwritten lyrics to the song “Billy Jean sold for $40,625 (had an estimated price of $2500). Jackson’s 1984 Video Music Award brought in $50,000 (estimated price $10,000) and a pair of signed black loafers sold for $18,750.

Elvis Presley memorabilia also saw some big bids. A motorcycle jacket worn by the King of Rock and Roll soled for $41,600 and an “E.P.” necklace sold for $31,250. The most talked about Elvis item, a lock of Elvis hair, brought in $4000.

Julien’s describes the lock of Elvis’ hair, saying:

“A plastic vial containing Elvis Presley’s hair clippings as collected by Homer “Gil” Gilleland, Presley’s personal barber. Gilleland began his relationship with the Presleys as Gladys Presley’s hairdresser in the 1950s at Goldsmith’s Department Store. He was introduced to Elvis and became his hairdresser. As he worked with Elvis off and on up through the 1970s, Gilleland kept locks of Presley’s hair, attaching them to business cards and ultimately giving large collections to friends.”

Julien’s was planning to sell Elvis Presley’s crypt, but the sale was cancelled after protests.

Several pieces of Madonna’s lingerie were also auctioned off. A negligee worn during her Blonde Ambition tour sold for $34,375 while another piece of underwear which was worn on stage sold for $13,750.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that memorabilia for Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, John Lennon, and Keith Richards was also on sale during the Rock Icon Auction. [ You can see all of the items recently sold at auction here. ]

The auction also included memorabilia from sports legends like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. A pair of MJ’s game worn Nike’s sold for $10,000.
