EA Confirms Respawn Entertainment Working On Sci-Fi Shooter

It’s been a a little over a year since Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella – as well as a healthy chunk of other Infinity Ward employees – split with Activision and formed a new studio, Respawn Entertainment, under EA’s banner. We knew that the studio was working on something , but EA has been keeping the details to themselves.

While that didn’t really change at this year’s E3, EA was willing to at least throw us a bone by revealing just what type of game it will be. Speaking at a meeting during E3, EA Games president Frank Gibeau told CVG that Respawn’s debut title will be a “sci-fi shooter”.

“In general we’re going to continue to follow our rotation strategy of giving studios a full two-year cycle to get a game built and polished to maximum quality, but we’re going to do it in a way that allows us to maximise technology investments like Frostbite 2, the online service models that we’re doing… we’re going to be able to trade team knowledge and increase the quality of the products year in, year out,” he explained.

Gibeau went on to explain that EA’s goal was to spread out their shooter franchises such as Battlefield , Medal of Honor and Respawn’s unannounced title so as not to over-annualize and “burn the teams down.” He added that both Respawn Entertainment and Insomniac’s upcoming titles were more sci-fi than moden military shooter, so they’ve opted to space the different franchises out accordingly.

“So it allows us to pick and choose the best of the sci-fi shooters. It allows us to compete with things like Gears and Halo and put them on places in our release calendar where they’re not cannibalistic to the core business and that’s the essential strategy going forward.”
