The Duggars may adopt their 20th child if the Lord deems it to be His will. The couple, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, already have 19 children, two grandchildren, and a third grandchild on the way.
The Duggars explained their decision to PEOPLE , saying that the number of kids they have right now doesn’t mean that their family is complete. Michelle, 45, explained:
“We are open to the idea of adoption. We are praying about it, and we will see what God has in store. Love for children has been placed on our hearts.”
The idea for the Duggars to adopt a child came during a recent visit to China. The trip, which will be shown during a special 19 Kids & Counting: Duggars Do Asia on TLC , involved the family visiting an orphanage near Beijing.
The couple went on to explain that their kids are hoping they will open their home to at least one child. Michelle explained, “They see how much we have been blessed with and how little so many children have and they want to share.” However, they are not completely sure of the decision.
The Duggars lost their last pregnancy, a girl named Jubilee, to a miscarriage in 2011. Despite their loss, Michelle explained, “We are open to whatever is in store … we want to approach it with an open heart.”
The Duggars explained that their uncertainty comes from how the child would be added to their lives. If Michelle were to get pregnant again, then they would know it was God’s will. On the other hand, Michelle explained of the decision to adopt, “We have to know for sure that is what God wants for us to do.”
She added that the couple already has several friend who adopted children. Do you think the Duggars should adopt another child, or is 19 enough?
