Drew Barrymore is getting seriously candid about her divorce from Will Kopelman and revealing that their split has made her feel like “the biggest failure.”
Speaking out about her and Will’s break-up in a new interview on Chelsea Handler’s new talk show, Chelsea , on May 10, Drew admitted that she purposely made sure the word “failure” was featured in the joint statement she and Kopelman issued to announce their split because that’s exactly how she feels about her surprising split.
“I put in my statement, about [our] divorce, the word ‘failure,’ because it’s so honest,” Drew told Handler on the new streaming show this week. “When you break up with somebody, you’re like, ‘Yeah, that didn’t work,’ [but] when you get divorced you’re like, ‘I’m the biggest failure. This is the biggest failure.’”
Drew Barrymore, who has been married twice before, then confessed that she feels “shameful” as a result of her and Will’s divorce before admitting that she’s still struggling with the split.
“[It’s] hard to actually go through that, even privately,” Barrymore admitted of her divorce, revealing that she’s going through a “tough time” since announcing her separation last month.
“It’s a tough time. It’s a hard thing to go through,” Drew said on the show. “It’s like your being put on a cheese grater and every second, going, ‘Ahh! This wasn’t the plan!’”
Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman issued a joint statement announcing their divorce in early April, where the former couple, who married in 2012, admitted that they would continue to be a family and would continue to co-parent their two daughters, Olive and Frankie Barrymore Kopelman.
“Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family,” Barrymore and Kopelman said in a statement obtained by Entertainment Tonight earlier this year, just four years after they tied the knot.
“Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on,” Drew and Will continued in their joint message. “Our children are our universe, and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as the first priority.”
As for what’s next for Drew following her split, Barrymore admitted on Chelsea Handler’s new talk show that she’s not looking to date again anytime soon and will instead be having some “girlfriend time” with her closest friends to recover from her surprising split from her husband of four years.
“There has been this really nice feeling of something very fluid and positive and the opposite of how I felt inside,” Drew told Chelsea Handler earlier this week, admitting that she’s received a lot of love from her friends, family, and fans since dropping her divorce bombshell in April.
“Everyone has just been so cool and chill and nice about everything that it quelled by own fears and demons about how we sort of have to go through things in life,” Barrymore said.
But while Drew and Will’s split came as a shock to the actress’s fans, E! News reported at the time that Drew’s decision to divorce was a “slow burn” and was actually a long time coming for Barrymore.
“This was a slow burn. It was not a decision that they came to overnight,” a source told the site of the Barrymore and Kopelman’s split earlier this year. “They worked on things for a long time and have had time to adjust.”
