Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton battled it out on stage at Hofstra University last night in the first presidential debate of the 2016 election race. It was entertaining, to say the least, but neither candidate truly captured the trust or confidence of the American people.
It was obvious that Trump wanted to take control of the debate right off the bat, and he was able to do that for the first 20 minutes. After that, however, the tides seemed to turn. Clinton went on the offensive and, Donald Trump appeared to be on his heels the rest of the way, although he continued making small, but effective comments from time to time.
Despite Clinton’s offensive game plan, she did not do enough to win voters over through her performance.
Following the debate, Donald Trump took to his personal Twitter account to blast Clinton on taxes and her track record in other countries.

CNN’s poll seemed to show that Clinton had defeated Donald Trump by a large margin. In fact, the margin that the poll showed was 62 percent for Clinton and only 27 percent for Trump. That wasn’t the only poll that came out throughout the night following the debate.
Donald Trump posted the results of a few other polls on his Twitter account as well. Polls from big websites like TIME and CNBC showed that Trump was voted as the winner of the first debate. Outside of those two big sites, there were plenty of other polls that Trump posted about that proclaimed him the victor.

Since the screenshot of the TIME poll was taken, it has tightened considerably.
Throughout the debate, it seemed that Trump was frustrated with the way the debate was being moderated. He said after the debate that he felt Lester Holt did a good job as the moderator. Even with that comment, he still noted on Twitter that Holt chose to let Clinton get by easy without having to answer questions on her email scandal, her foundation issues, or Benghazi.
Nothing on emails. Nothing on the corrupt Clinton Foundation. And nothing on #Benghazi . #Debates2016 #debatenight

That is certainly a fair complaint, as Holt did choose to grill and fact-check Donald Trump on his unwillingness to release his tax return, which is under audit, and the birther issue with Barack Obama.
Donald Trump did fire back at Hillary Clinton on the birther issue, claiming that she had treated Obama with major disrespect and her campaign had tried to dig up proof that Obama was not a U.S. citizen.
Trump did go so far as to say that he felt he had done a good job when it came to the birther issue with Obama.
“When I got involved, I didn’t fail. I got him to give the birth certificate. I think I did a good job.”
Perhaps the best comment of the entire debate from Donald Trump came when Clinton was debating him on his tax returns. He said that he would go against his lawyer’s advice and release his tax returns when Clinton released her deleted emails from her private server.

All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what the second debate between Trump and Clinton holds. Clinton has much more experience on the debate stage, but now that Trump has experienced his first one-on-one debate, there is a good chance he will come out much more aggressive next time around.
During a post-debate interview with Sean Hannity, Trump did mention that he tempered himself and held back “inappropriate comments” about Bill Clinton. He decided to hold off on making the comments because Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea, was in attendance. The comments would have come after Clinton pointed to allegedly misogynistic statements that Trump had made in the past.
“I was going to say something extremely rough to Hillary, to her family and I said to myself ‘I can’t do it. I just can’t do it. It’s inappropriate. It’s not nice.’”
No matter who viewers thought was the winner of the first debate, the two candidates are far from done with each other. There are still two more debates scheduled between the two presidential candidates.
Donald Trump may not be favored to win the election at this point in time, but he is not as far behind as some Hillary Clinton supporters may try to claim.
