Katy Perry and Lady Gaga might be the secret weapons you need to lose weight.

Some folks might balk at the idea of putting on the latest pop hits when they’re in the gym, but a team of scientists believe they’ve created the ultimate workout playlist. Of course, these songs probably won’t help people who are violently opposed to the works of Katy Perry, Lady Gaga , and Daft Punk.

The scientists reportedly received some assistance from Spotify while crafting their ultimate workout playlist. However, Brunel University psychologist Dr. Costas Karageorghis is the guy responsible for putting this list together. It seems the good doctor knows a thing or two about the relationship between music and physical performance.

“When synching your movements to the beat of the music, increase the intensity of your workout by raising the music tempo by one or two BPMs beyond your comfort zone — this will increase your workrate with the added benefit that the difference in effort will be almost imperceptible,” Dr. Karageorghis explained.

Scientists worked through approximately 6.7 million compilations to develop their ultimate workout playlist. Although hitting the treadmill with Katy Perry’s “Roar” pounding through your headphones might seem like an extreme way to lose weight, Dr. Karageorghis feels the singer is one of the cogs in this effective fat-busting machine.

The secret to the ultimate workout playlist’s success if BPM. Folks who lose the most weight synchronize their time in the gym to a beat, which gradually increases over the course of the workout. After starting out with something along the lines of Katy Perry’s “Roar,” you eventually move into something like Lady Gaga’s “Applause.”

Once you’ve reached the so-called sweet spot — which resides somewhere between 125 and 140 BPM — Dr. Karageorghis believes you should down with the popular Lorde track “Royals.” However, scientists believe that folks should also feel some sort of an emotional connection with the music as well.

“A suitably motivational playlist can help to ‘color’ the symptoms of exercise-related fatigue, like breathlessness and a beating heart, in such a way that they are interpreted in a more positive manner. This means that at the point when your body is shouting ‘stop,’ the music has the power to lift your mood and beckon you on,” Dr. Karageorghis explained.
