Disney Studios has been on a winning streak for a good part of 2016. Box Office Mojo has tallied up the earnings and the animated hit film Zootopia released in February 2016, managed to top $1 billion worldwide and is still raking in millions after almost five months in theaters.
Then Disney released the motion capture remake of the Jungle Book, which has captured almost $930 million internationally after 10 weeks in theaters.
Lastly, Finding Dory, which released on June 17, is number one at the box office for the second week in a row for a two-week worldwide total of nearly $290 million .
Zootopiatells the story of Judy Hopps, a young Bunny Rabbit from the countryside with big dreams of attending the Police Academy in the big city. Upon moving to the city she meets Nick, a sly fox who is a two-bit con artist. The two have no choice but to team up on a missing person case. Together they unravel a dangerous mystery that affects the whole city of Zootopia.
This is one of the few original films this year. The hook for Zootopia was basically the marketing success and the critical acclaim. Deadline explains that the film catapulted to success with its $75 million opening weekend as the creative marketing campaign helped Disney with a variety of gimmicks including imitation “year in movies” with the hilarious trailers that played in front of Star Wars: The Force Awakens helped to garner interest in the film.
With $340 million domestic (and not dead yet), has earned a remarkable financial multiplier , says Forbes . This makes it one of the lengthier runs in recent movie history as it spent 13 consecutive weeks in the cinematic top 10. This places the movie right behind James Cameron’s film Avatar (14 weeks), and Frozen (16 weeks).
The Jungle Booktells the story of Mowgli, an orphaned child living in the jungle among wild animals. Breakout star Neel Sethi as Mowgli with characters voiced by Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson, Giancarlo Esposito and Christopher Walken.
Audiences were amazed at how realistic the scenery appeared. Jungle Book was shot completely on green screen, but from the acting and movements, it looks like it was filmed in the Amazon jungle. Director John Favreau has set the bar high in 2016, and it will not be surprising if the film is nominated for directorial, technical, and performance awards in 2017.
According to NBC News , in the first weekend of release, The Jungle Book exceeded expectations with $103.6 million in the U.S., where it’s shown impressive holding power. From there, the film held the top spot at the domestic box office for three weeks before the arrival of Captain America: Civil War .
Disney’s partnership with Pixar continues to reap massive box office success with their latest venture, Finding Dory. Now, Finding Doryis so far standing tall in its second week of release at number one. Last week Finding Dorymade history as it kicked off its first weekend by breaking the domestic box office opening record for an animated movie with $136 million in ticket sales.
Finding Dory will continue to see financial gains in the weeks to come. Variety reported in its second week of release Finding Dory earned an additional $75 million beating out the anticipated, but critically panned film Independence Day: Resurgence, new shark thriller The Shallows , Civil War drama Free State of Jones and Nicolas Winding Refn horror movie The Neon Demon .
CNN Money states, without counting any revenue made from the release of Finding Dory , the collective of Disney studio films have crossed the $10 billion threshold. Proof that Disney continues to rule the 2016 box office.
