Disabled Children Should Be Put Down, Says Disgraced Councilor

Colin Brewer used to be a member of the Cornwall Council, but then he said that disabled children should be put down to save the government money.

According to the IB Times , the councilor made his comment at an equality event in October 2011. Theresa Court, the advice services manager for the charity Disability Cornwall, said that Brewer told her that disabled children should be put down as “they cost the council too much money.”

Court filed a complaint but the matter was only recently resolved.

Brewer issued a formal apology to the charity, writing:

“I am writing to offer my wholehearted apology for the offense these remarks have clearly caused. While I meant no offense by my remarks to you I can see, in retrospect, that they were ill-judged and insensitive and should not have been made at all.”

Brewer told the BBC that he was sorry for the remark but said that he had no intention of resigning.

Brewer said:

“I have no intention of resigning. I don’t think I have done anything wrong. I have apologized. I have been a Councillor for nearly 26 years. I have always worked to the best of my ability.”

Cornwall may have no plans to resign as councilor but he has been removed from his political group. This Is Cornwall reports that group leader John Wood said that he had no hesitation before removing Brewer from the group.

Wood said:

“I had no hesitation in contacting Collin at half past 11 last night and telling him that he was no longer welcome as a member of the Independent group.”
