Although a prequel to Kurt Sutter’s highly-successful Sons of Anarchy has been in the works for a while now, new information teased that a certain Hollywood star might be set the join the project. In fact, while it is still up in the air if Charlie Hunnam will be a part of the new series, the actor did hint that Brad Pitt might play his father in the prequel.
In an interview with Men’s Journal , Hunnam revealed that Sutter is currently working on a prequel to the hit biker drama. Although he was fairly slim on the details, Hunnam was asked about the idea of Pitt playing the role of John Teller.
In response, Hunnam could hardly hold back his enthusiasm, leaving fans wondering if his comments are confirmation that Pitt will join the project.
“Did you read that about Brad Pitt maybe playing my dad?” Hunnam asked in the interview. “Brad Pitt as John Teller. How awesome would that be?”
While this is certainly exciting news for Sons of Anarchy fans, Hunnam did not confirm his part in the prequel. Based on the time and setting of the new series, it seems unlikely that Hunnam’s character, Jax Teller, will make an appearance.
In fact, in speaking with Deadline , Sutter revealed his thoughts about the prequel and what the storyline might be. Based on his comments, the prequel may take place far enough in the past that it would not touch on anything that occurred in Sons of Anarchyand would instead focus on the origins of the motorcycle club.
“At some point I do have plans to hopefully do the prequel, which I do see as a one-off 10- or 12-episode thing where we begin in Nam and see John Teller and Piney and see how that relationship got created,” Sutter explained. “And bring them back to the States and the obvious external dynamics that were going on with the country and the perception of the war and what an odd kind of perception these vets got when they returned home.”
In the meantime, Den of Geek is reporting that Sutter is currently hard at work at a new spinoff series based in the world of Sons of Anarchy . The new show would center on one of SAMCRO’s biggest rivals, the Mayans. At this time, it is not known if Charlie Hunnam will make any cameos in the series.
Following the cancellation of his latest series, The Bastard Executioner ,Sutter now has time to work on both of these new projects. Although Sutter worked as the creator and writer for Sons of Anarchy, he will be the executive producer in the prequel and is expected to hire another person to handle everything else in the spinoff.
According to Variety , fans can expect something from Sutter in the near future. In fact, the CEO of FX, John Landgraf, told the outlet the Sons of Anarchy creator is “working on an idea for a new show,” for the network. However, Landgraf cautioned fans that Sutter might take a short break to recuperate from The Bastard Executioner before he dives into a new project.
“He’ll be coming to me soon,” Landgraf stated.
Whether or not this means that Sutter will tackle the prequel or the spin-off first is yet to be seen. While Hunnam’s role in the projects has not been revealed, no official word has been released concerning Pitt’s involvement in the series. Considering how popular Sons of Anarchy was when it aired, it would not be surprising to see someone of Pitt’s caliber included in the prequel.
