Suicide Squad hits theaters nationwide this weekend as the follow-up to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice . As part of the DC Extended Universe film franchise, Suicide Squad tells the story of how The Joker, Harley Quinn and an assortment of other villains team up to complete tasks for the federal government that guys like Batman and Superman aren’t allowed to know about. Despite a trend of negative reviews , DC Comics fans are still very anxious to see the third part of the DCEU series.
As The Irish News reported, the Suicide Squad movie has an ensemble cast that includes the likes of Will Smith (Deadshot), Jared Leto (The Joker) and Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn). That has brought a lot of attention to some DC Comics characters that may not be familiar to those who aren’t regularly picking up new comic books. With the March release of DC Universe: Rebirth , virtually every character from the pages of DC Comics was suddenly set on a new path. The relaunch spawned more than twenty new DC titles, including Suicide Squad: Rebirth and Harley Quinn: Rebirth , both of which were published just days before the movie was released.

The first issue of Harley Quinn: Rebirth provided all the background needed for readers who have never encountered Harley Quinn. From her love affair with The Joker to her Gang of Harleys, Quinn tells the readers just how she went from being a leading psychiatrist to being the antihero that is slowly taking Catwoman’s place as the sultriest seductress with ties to Gotham City. By the end of the first issue, Harley’s Deadpool-ripoff stalker Red Tool loses an arm as he tries to help Quinn fend off a horde of zombies who are attacking Coney Island.

While Harley’s comic mentions her affiliation with the Suicide Squad, it doesn’t go into great detail about how or why she fights as part of Task Force X. Suicide Squad: Rebirth , however, lays the groundwork for Nick Flag to lead a team of colorful criminals. Fans hoping to see all of the characters from the Suicide Squad movie in the first issue of their Rebirth series will be disappointed. In the comic book, Flag is introduced to just three members of the black ops unit he will be leading: Harley Quinn, Deadshot and Boomerang. Yet to make an appearance are big names like Batman, The Joker, Killer Croc and Enchantress.

In the film, Enchantress is played by Cara Delevingne, who has used the increased exposure from Suicide Squad to speak out about teenage depression. Diagnosed at a young age, Cara describes the liberation she felt when she quit taking her meds at the age of eighteen.
“That week, I lost my virginity, I got into fights, I cried, I laughed. It was the best thing in the world to feel things again. And I get depressed still, but I would rather learn to figure it out myself than be dependent on meds, ever. I hate meds.”
As reported by Perez Hilton , Cara admits that the drugs may have saved her life, but still says she “doesn’t agree” with them.
