Daniel Day-Lewis Announces Hiatus, Feels He Peaked With ‘Lincoln’

After his historic Oscar win Sunday, Daniel Day-Lewis announced that he is taking a hiatus from acting.

The British actor made Oscars history last night by becoming the first man to win the Best Actor award three times: First in 1989 for My Left Foot , then in 2007 for There Will Be Blood , and last night for his portrayal of US President Abraham Lincoln in the Steven Spielberg biopic.

However, as MSN reports, Day-Lewis is stepping away from acting for a little while.

“I can’t think of anyone right now (I would like to play) because I need to have to lie down for a couple of years,” he announced backstage at the Oscars. “It’s really hard to imagine doing anything after this.”

Daniel Day-Lewis previously took a five-year hiatus from acting after his 1997 film The Boxer. He returned in Martin Scorsese’s 2002 historical film Gangs of New York , playing “Bill the Butcher.” He earned his third Academy Award nomination for the role, and took home a BAFTA for Best Actor.

Last night, after accepting his third Best Actor Oscar from Meryl Streep, Day-Lewis began his speech by saying “I really don’t know how any of this happened.” As we wryly noted during our live Twitter blog during the Oscars:
