NASCAR driver Danica Patrick has reportedly filed for divorce from her husband Paul Hospenthal. The split was originally announced by Patrick on Facebook towards the end of November.
The Superior Court of Maricopa County received the official paperwork from Patrick on January 3. According to Fox Sports , the driver explained in court documents that her marriage to Hospenthal was “irretrievably broken.”
Since a prenuptial agreement was signed prior to their union, it would appear that neither party is interested in fighting over money. Reports also indicate that Patrick and Hospenthal are not asking for alimony or spousal support from one another.
News of the divorce first arrived on Facebook . Eager to address the news before it spread out of control around the internet, the NASCAR driver instead took the announcement directly to her friends.
Danica Patrick wrote:
“I am sad to inform my fans that after seven years, Paul and I have decided to amicably end our marriage. This isn’t easy for either of us, but mutually it has come to this. He has been an important person and friend in my life and that’s how we will remain moving forward.
USA Today explains that Patrick is hoping to file a settlement agreement at some point in the future. This will reportedly cover any property or monies that weren’t covered by the couple’s prenuptial agreement.
Danica Patrick and Paul Hospenthal married in 2005. The pair met when Paul, a physical therapist, began treating Danica for an injury. The couple soon tied the knot despite their 17 year age difference. During their marriage, Hospenthal kept a pretty low profile and was rarely spotted during many of his wife’s races.
