There’s no question that the current UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey is the most dominant female fighter in the history of combat sports. Rousey has completely walked through everyone she’s ever fought, and on February 28 at UFC 184, Rousey will face what many people think will be her toughest challenge yet: Cat Zingano.
Rousey was originally supposed to fight Zingano in December of 2013, but Zingano blew out her knee, which forced her to miss 17 months of action. Rousey fought longtime rival Miesha Tate instead — who Zingano originally beat to become the number one contender. Tate was the first opponent of Rousey’s to make it out of the first round, as Tate lasted until the third round, and eventually submitted.
Zingano looked good in her last fight, as she weathered the early storm from Amanda Nunes, and eventually won by TKO in the third and final round. Like Rousey, Zingano is undefeated.
If Ronda Rousey completely walks through Zingano like she has everyone else, the UFC will have a very hard time finding an opponent who’s a threat to Rousey. Sure, there’s always a chance that the UFC could sign Christiane “Cyborg” Justino, and finally make the fight that UFC fans have been waiting for. But, the chances of that are slim, as Justino may not be able to make it down to 135 pounds.
There’s also new UFC signee Holly Holm, who will make her UFC debut at UFC 184. Nobody knows how Holm will do in the UFC, but if she wins her debut in dominant fashion, then the UFC may end up rushing her into a title fight with Rousey.
After last night’s UFC Fight Night, UFC President Dana White was asked about what he’s planning to do if Rousey completely obliterates Zingano, and White responded by saying that he may have to start putting Rousey in the cage with men.
“She’s gonna have to start fighting men if she walks through Cat Zingano. If Ronda Rousey walks through Cat Zingano the way she has walked through every body else, I don’t know what to do with her.”
There’s almost no chance that Dana White will make Rousey start fighting men if she wins her next fight, but there’s no question that the UFC will have a problem on their hands if Rousey destroys Zingano. Rousey has already destroyed every top contender in the UFC Women’s Bantamweight division, therefore eliminating any intriguing match-ups in the immediate future.
