Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Quarterbacks Carson Wentz Or Paxton Lynch Going To Big D In First Round Of NFL Draft — Team May Trade Up

The Dallas Cowboys know that 2015 was a complete and total loss thanks to a lot of injuries and losing streaks that just wouldn’t stop. They’re hoping that Tony Romo is going to be able to stay healthy in 2016 and wide receiver Dez Bryant as well. Still, the future needs to be considered, and with the NFL Draft quickly approaching, the names of quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Paxton Lynch are being said often in Dallas.

In 2016 NFL free agency, the Dallas Cowboys have been extremely quiet haven’t done a whole lot. One of the most confusing things is that they didn’t attempt to upgrade the quarterback position after all the trouble that came about last year.

Tony Romo will return as the starting quarterback, and now Kellen Moore is the back-up with Jameill Showers as the third-stringer. Brandon Weeden was cut last season and Matt Cassel is now in Tennessee, and that’s about it.

Now, though, it’s time for the Cowboys to start looking at the future, and that means the 2016 NFL Draft. Dallas has the number four overall pick, but there is talk that they could trade up in order to get the player they want, and right now, that’s one of two quarterbacks — Carson Wentz of North Dakota State or Paxton Lynch of Memphis.

Jared Goff out of California is expected to be gone off the board to the Cleveland Browns at the number two pick. Considering the Browns signed Robert Griffin III, though, it’s possible they could dangle the pick in a trade.

If Goff is off the table, many believe that it is Lynch the Cowboys are leaning more toward. Blogging the Boys is in the same boat as others who think that while none of the three top quarterback prospects stand out overall, it’s Lynch leading the pack.

No matter who is left on the board, quarterback-wise, the Dallas Cowboys could end up taking whoever is left. They need someone to mold behind Tony Romo for a few years, and he doesn’t have many left. He’s not getting any younger and his injuries keep on piling up, so someone needs to come in and become the future of the Cowboys.

If Jerry Jones has something else in mind for his backup quarterback, though, the Cowboys could possibly stray in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Jalen Ramsey, cornerback out of Florida State, is one of the top prospects on the Cowboys’ board and one of the top athletes in the entire draft. The San Diego Chargers are picked by many mock drafts to select him at number three, but if he’s still there at four, the Cowboys will have to think long and hard about passing him by.

Other mock drafts, such as a recent one from SB Nation , has the Cowboys going defense even with Ramsey off the board. They have Dallas selecting Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa, and that would not be a bad pick at all. He’s big, talented, has a huge upside, and would contribute immediately.

“…still don’t think the Cowboys should go with a quarterback with the fourth pick in the draft because it probably won’t impact the team much in 2016. Bosa would. He would pair nicely with DeMarcus Lawrence as bookend edge players for the Cowboys.”

The Dallas Cowboys need a lot of help at numerous positions, and the 2016 NFL Draft is a great place for them to find it. Carson Wentz and Paxton Lynch are truly the two top names they will be looking at, but Jalen Ramsey is one who won’t be able to avoid if he’s still around at number four.
