Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted that he wants a new contract with Real Madrid, bringing an end to the constant transfer speculation that has linked him with a move away from the Bernabeu.
The Portuguese forward made these remarks on Wednesday when he was rewarded with the European Golden Shoe for 2013-2013, a gong that is given to the player who scored the most goals in a season. He will share the accolade with Barcelona’s Luis Suarez, who scored 31 Premier League goals for Liverpool last season. He subsequently joined the Catalan side for $110 million in the summer.
The 29-year-old was presented with a shiny shoe for his efforts, and upon receiving it he made his declaration.
“I hope to finish my contract with Real Madrid at 33 and after that we’ll see if they want me to stay. I feel young and still a long way off retiring. I’m very happy and in a great moment of form. Personally and in sporting terms, everything is going well. I want to win and get as many trophies as possible with this club.”
This was the third time that Cristiano Ronaldo had picked up the Golden Shoe, and he is widely expected to claim the Ballon d’Or for a third time in January too. This is because on top of his goal-scoring exploits for Real Madrid last season, he has also already scored 22 goals in all competitions this season too.
Back in September Ronaldo was heavily linked with a return to Manchester United. The forward was at Old Trafford between 2003 and 2009, and during this period it is widely believed that he blossomed into the player that he is today. The Red Devils have also struggled immensely since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson and it was thought that the club would try to sign Ronaldo in order to lift the spirits of the supporters.
According to The Guardian though, Manchester United’s new manager, Louis Van Gaal, isn’t interested in purchasing any more players. That’s despite the fact that they are currently 13 points behind the Premier League leaders, Chelsea, and have had their worst start to a Premier League season since 1986.
Rather than rushing to purchase players in January, Van Gaal will wait until the summer to pursue the likes of Roma’s Kevin Strootman, Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and other defensive-minded players. That might also mean that they could test Real Madrid’s resolve with an offer for Cristiano Ronaldo too.
