Cristiano Ronaldo has been dubbed history’s “greatest-ever athlete” — and worth over 1 billion dollars to boot, according to his agent Jorge Mendes. This statement follows the one in which Mendes said that Ronaldo would never transfer to Manchester United — as has been widely reported — and will end his days in Real Madrid.
Cristiano is going on where he left off last season, with the brief interruption for the World Cup and has already established that he will likely be hard to beat for a consecutive Ballon d’Or. With 19 goals in 11 games in La Liga and international competitions, he is positively on fire.
And Mendes believes that his client Cristiano Ronaldo will go down in history as the greatest athlete that ever lived, in an interview with AS .
“In addition to being the best footballer in history, he is the greatest athlete of all time. You cannot compare him with anyone.”
“He is the best player in the biggest sport in the world, in which there is more competition than in any other. For that reason, he is the best sportsman in the world.”
“The price that is stated in his release clause – €1bn.” Mendes said when asked what the Portuguese striker would be worth if another team was potentially interested.
Provided he continues to stay fit and free from injury — which was a problem at the end of last season and during the World Cup — Mendes predicts that in the 2014-2015 season, Ronaldo will break his 60-goals scored record of last year.
“I’m sure that he will beat his personal record if he does not have any physical problems. For Cristiano, nothing is impossible. He is going to continue evolving and improving until he retires.”
“Notice how Cristiano is a winger – he’s not a striker and his numbers are outrageous. He plays very far from goal and has to make significant efforts to arrive into the box. For that, he deserves even more credit for what he achieves.”
Some may question Mendes’ assertions that Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest athlete in history. What about Michael Jordan, for example? The guy had serious skills and blew rivals away with his command of the basketball.
Mendes has a point though, as comparatively a lot more people play football, or soccer as it’s known in the U.S., and there is definitely more competition for that top spot. Not many can call themselves the best in the world, and if you are a Lionel Messi fan, you will certainly not take this assertion sitting down. But love him or hate him, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to prove that he one of the top footballers ever.
