The 2013 CMT Awards big winners were Miranda Lambert and Florida Georgia Line, though American Idol alum Carrie Underwood won big with video of the year.
Underwood’s win, for “Blown Away,” capped off an awesome night for the singer, who also made an emotional tribute to Oklahoma tornado victims during the event.
It is the second time in as many years that Underwood has won the fan-voted award. She stated, “The good Lord has been very good to me — well, to all of us in this room — for a very long time.” And fans have also been good to Underwood, who is the top winner in CMT Awards history with 10 belt buckles.
It was also unsurprising to see country music power couple Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert continue their winning streak. While Lambert took home trophies for Performance of the Year (“Over You”) and Female Video of the Year (“Mama’s Broken Heart”), Shelton won Male Video of the Year (“Sure Be Cool If You Did”).
“Over You” has enjoyed massive success at awards shows this year. Along with Performance of the Year, Blake and Miranda won three awards related to the tune, which they co-wrote about Shelton’s late brother, at the Academy of Country Music Awards. The song also helped the couple win Song of the Year at the CMA Awards last November.
Along with Lambert, Shelton, and Underwood, newcomer duo Florida Georgia Line also continued their winning streak with Breakthrough Video of the Year and Duo Video of the Year for “Cruise.”
The song has given Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard four awards so far. After the show, Hubbard stated of the tune:
“That came from the songwriting gods themselves. We wrote that song with a couple of buddies a few years back. It started at our house. We watched it go from the living room to the stage to the studio to the radio, and it’s just continued to build.”
Other winners at the 2013 CMT Music Awards were Lady Antebellum (“Downtown”) and Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, and Eric Church (“The Only Way I Know”).
