Christopher Dorner supporters rallied outside the Los Angeles Police Department headquarters on Saturday to protest the police brutality and corruption the ex-cop tried to expose before his death this week.
The protest drew dozens of people to the LAPD headquarters, and while they were careful to say they did not support Dorner’s alleged shooting rampage, they believe his qualms against the LAPD were founded.
Dorner was fired from the LAPD in 2008 in what he believed was retribution for speaking out against abuse within the department. Before his firing, Dorner claimed that a colleague who kicked a man with schizophrenia, then lied about it on a police report.
Before Christopher Dorner went on his alleged shooting rampage — he is accused of killing two police officers and two civilians — he posted a manifesto to Facebook laying out the abuses he saw within the LAPD.
The protesters on Saturday spoke out against the way the LAPD handled the manhunt for Dorner — on two occasions, police mistook bystanders for Dorner and shot them. From The Huffington Post :
“Thirty-year-old protester Michael Nam held a sign with a flaming tombstone and the inscription ‘RIP Habeas Corpus.’ He and others said they were angered by the conduct of the manhunt that led to Dorner’s death and injuries to innocent bystanders who were mistaken for him.”
Protesters have also taken issue with the end of the manhunt, during which Christopher Dorner died in a cabin as it burst into flames. During a standoff with police, news outlets caught police talking on scanners that sounded as if they gave orders to burn the cabin down . Police deny intentionally setting the blaze.
