Cats are, at the same time, the most adorable creatures you’ll ever be around — and the most annoying. Not even the most devoted cat person ever really figures out the bizarre behavior of his or her feline companion. With a cat in the house, most of the time it seems like its the cat’s world. You just live in it.
It takes a person with considerable ingenuity, tolerance and wit to put up with a cat. Maybe that’s why a recent study showed that, on average, cat people are more intelligent than dog people. While owning a dog is all about having a loyal friend for life, sharing your life with a cat — or two or three — is a constant battle of wits.
That may also be why a recent poll showed that many more people consider themselves “dog people” rather than “cat people.” While 74 percent of respondents said they like dogs “a lot,” only 41 percent said the same of cats. But that’s not too surprising. Dogs give you their affection unconditionally. Cats make you prove that you’re worth their valuable time.
After all, cats have many more important things to do that hang around with people. Running full speed from one end of the house to the other for no apparent reason, for example. Or knocking over potted plants and any beverage left unattended. That sort of thing. But, when a cat finally decides to show you some affection, it goes all out — and often than not, it comes when you least expect it. Like, at four in the morning or when you’ve got an important presentation at work that you need to finish.
A recent study at the University of Texas found some interesting differences in the personalities of cat and dog people. Cat people were more neurotic by about 12 percent. But they were also more open — by an 11 percent margin in the study — to new ideas, art and adventure. Cat people were more willing to explore unconventional beliefs and attitudes, while dog people tended to be more conservative and traditional in their outlook.
Cat people also tended to be more introverted than dog people and less disciplined when it comes to accomplishing specific tasks. At the same time, cat people were more given to spontaneous behavior and less likely to plan everything out.
