In one of the oddest casting combinations of late, French director Fabienne Berthaud has cast Norman Reedus, Lena Dunham, and Diane Kruger for his upcoming road movie thriller, Sky , according to A.V. Club . French actor Gilles Lellouche has also been cast in the role of the husband Kruger’s character kills during a violent argument, sending her off on a road trip through California and Nevada.
There’s been no word yet on what characters Dunham and Reedus will play, but given they both play rather unconventional roles in their TV series, expect something odd.
Norman Reedus is best known as Daryl Dixon on the zombie apocalypse phenomenon known as The Walking Dead . His “still waters run deep” character, known for his trademark crossbow and his quiet toughness, rarely cracks a smile. But Reedus has played many sorts of sullen, tough characters, once joking about the type of roles he tends to add to his acting resume and how it happened.
“Early on, I was so insecure as an actor that I just gave everyone dirty looks. I thought they all hated me. And somehow I’ve played parts since then where I murder people. It’s kind of like that scowl turned into a career. All of my favorite actors brood. Clint Eastwood definitely had a scowl happening. Charlie Bronson. Marlon Brando had one when he wanted one. Willem Dafoe can definitely turn your brain to ice by staring at you.”
Since Sky is a thriller, one can imagine Reedus may be playing a scary character in the upcoming film. Or perhaps a drifter who Kruger picks up along the way on her road trip.
Sky is reportedly already shooting, so Norman Reedus may not have too big of a role, given he is still up to his neck in zombies on the current season of The Walking Dead , which returns from its mid-season hiatus Sunday night. Plus Reedus has confirmed he will be returning for a Boondock Saints sequel, which has not released a date to start filming yet.
Kruger starred in the FX series The Bridge , which was not renewed after last season due to low ratings, despite major critical acclaim. Dunham stars in the rather controversial Girls on HBO, plus finds herself in the press every now and then for some of her controversial comments off screen. That should generate a little extra publicity for the film, in addition to having perhaps the current hottest working actor today in Norman Reedus. Girls want him, and guys want to be him. It’s good to play scowling badasses.
Catch Norman Reedus tonight in the mid-season return of The Walking Dead on AMC at 9 p.m. ET.
