Over the Fourth of July weekend, rumors started circulating on the internet that Samuel L. Jackson would once again be taking up the role of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These sorts of rumors either fall flat or explode when they turn out to be true, and this happens to be a case of the latter. Deadline reported on July 6 that Jackson would indeed be reprising the role of Nick Fury in the first female hero-led Marvel movie so far, Captain Marvel.
Jackson will be working alongside Academy-Award Winning actress Brie Larson who will be playing Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel. While we now have these two major names attached to the title, that is about all Marvel has been willing to give us so far. No details have been released specifically about the plot, other than the fact that Captain Marvel will be the character that links the two worlds of the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy together.
The main character, Carol Danvers, was an Air Force pilot who ends up with superhuman or alien powers such as super strength and the ability to fly. Exactly how they intend to frame this origin story in the MCU is currently unclear, though it has been confirmed that they intend to start the very beginning with Danvers in the upcoming movie. Ant-man and Dr. Strange were probably the most recent origin stories to come out in the MCU, as Spider-man and Black Panther were both introduced during Captain America: Civil War.
As for Nick Fury’s involvement with the film – this has created some debate. Some fans and amateur critics of the films suggest that they don’t think Larson and her character will be enough to bring in the box office numbers alone, while others think it fits naturally with the storyline we already have. Fury has generally been the one who brought in these superhumans, preparing them to be the Avengers. He did so with Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, though we haven’t seen much of Fury lately as he hasn’t appeared in any of the Marvel films since Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Are you looking forward to Captain Marvel? Are you glad to hear that Nick Fury is making a comeback in this new origin story? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
