Captain America 3 is still in the planning stages, but the creative minds behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier have let slip a few details behind their writing process, and it looks like the third movie will be something of a mix of the first two. Plus, we might see an appearance by a certain giant-headed character in a floating chair!
Winter Soldier , the second Captain America movie, has just come to DVD , and fans are already looking forward to the third installment of the Stars and Stripes hero. The second flick was more of a political action thriller, something of a departure from the fast-paced, action-centric Captain America: The First Avenger . The third Captain America film, according to screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, might be the one to bridge the gap in tone between the first two.
“We are working on something,” Markus said of the third script in an interview with SFX , “that I think is an amalgam [of the first two movies].”
“When we hit upon the Brubaker run of the comic book,” McFeely added, “we all said that, with certain exceptions, that’s the tone of Cap’s modern franchise. And you can imagine that with us back, with the Russos back, then if you like [‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’] you’ll hopefully like the third one, if we do it right!”
Asked if there were any characters the two wished they could have fit into Winter Soldier , Markus said that he’s always had an eye for Modok, one of the stranger looking characters ever to appear in the Captain America comics.
“I want to put Modok into something,” Markus said, “but you can’t just drop a giant floating head in! It’s not like, ‘Oh, we have to go talk to this guy – there’s something I should tell you about him first… ‘… I never win that fight!”
Markus adds that initial drafts of Winter Soldier had fellow Avenger Hawkeye making an appearance, but the character was removed in favor of giving Black Widow more screen time. That’s cool and all, but what about that Modok thing? A look at just what went down in the second Captain America flick shows that the foundation could already have been laid for Modok to show up.
Winter Soldier saw Captain America and Black Widow discovering the underground lair of Arnim Zola, a Nazi scientist who had transferred his brain imprint onto a massive network of computers. While Zola’s lair and mainframe were destroyed, who’s to say Zola couldn’t have transferred himself into some other computers? Who’s to say Zola couldn’t, for instance, locate a strange SHIELD or Hydra prototype? Say, a Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing? Maybe with a giant head and a floating chair?
That’s all comic movie conjecture, of course, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a strange place, what with its Guardians of the Galaxy and its giant talking ducks. A giant head floating on a rocket-powered chair wouldn’t be the craziest thing we’ve seen out of the House of Ideas. Come on, Marvel; make it happen!
