The teams at Infinity Ward and Treyarch have been using the same engine for the Call of Duty series for quite a long time now, and that isn’t going to change with the release of Call of Duty: Ghosts – but don’t be so quick to take that as a bad thing.
If you’ve followed the industry for awhile, you’ve likely seen a developer call an engine “new” when in fact it’s just an upgraded version of its predecessor.
With Call of Duty: Ghosts , the team at Infinity Ward isn’t throwing out the existing engine and creating a new one. Instead, they’re taking what works and upgrading it for the next generation. Externally, at least, they’re not calling it a “new” engine.
“When we’re [internally] talking about a new engine we’re talking about upgrading significant systems within that engine,” animation lead Zach Volker told Official PlayStation Magazine . “We’re not talking about throwing it all away and saying we’re starting from the ground up. It comes down to the systems we’re augmenting and upgrading, and trying to decide what is the significance of this upgrade.”
“New” engine or no, the screenshots released following Microsoft’s Xbox One press conference look quite nice .
While we have yet to have a good taste of Call of Duty: Ghosts – apart from all of the footage of dogs and the reveal trailer – we can expect to see a whole lot more when E3 kicks off in just about two weeks.
For now, why not re-watch the Call of Duty: Ghosts reveal trailer? And, yes, it has a dog in it.
