On Wednesday, Activision announced that sale of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 from developer Treyarch has managed to top over $1 billion in sales within the game’s first 15 days of availability.
The latest sales tally from Activision comes a few weeks after it announced that Black Ops 2 had managed to pull in an impressive $500 million in its first 24 hours on sale. Activision didn’t provide specific sales numbers for either figure. It did, however, point out that Black Ops 2 managed $1 billion in sales a day faster than its predecessor.
“The release of Call of Duty has been one of the most significant entertainment events of each of the last six years,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard.
“Since Call of Duty was launched, cumulative franchise revenues from players around the world are greater than current worldwide box office receipts to date for the top-10 grossing films of 2012 combined. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for ‘ Harry Potter ‘ and ‘ Star Wars ,’ the two most successful movie franchises of all time.”
Since Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 ‘s November 11 release date, Activision sales that players across the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms together have been playing for over 150 million hours.
Activision may be touting undeniably big numbers for the latest Call of Duty release, some analysts and investors suspect that the franchise is showing signs of beginning a downward trend.
Market Watch reports :
Early reactions from analysts were subdued. Atul Bagga of Lazard Capital noted that this year’s COD release included Black Friday, while the previous year did not. He also wrote that players of “Black Ops 2” seemed to log fewer playing hours on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network than on previous versions, “suggesting some decline in engagement.”
