The Boston Bruins thrashed the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-1 in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference final in front of a stunned crowd at the Consol Energy Center on Monday night.
The Bruins opened the scoring just 28 seconds into the game and never looked back en route to a comfortable victory, which gives them a 2-0 lead in the series.
Brad Marchand led the way with two goals while Nathan Horton, Johnny Boychuck, David Krejci, and Patrice Bergeron scored as well.
The series now shifts to Boston for the next two games, and Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma knows his team must improve drastically to get back into the series.
“As a group we need to get better,” he said. “We need to get our foundation of how we play and and play as a group and we didn’t do that.
“We’ve gotten off our game plan, we’ve deviated. We got down early again and not too far after the second goal we got off kilter and deviate from how we can play and what we need to do.”
The Bruins came out flying as Marchand scored less than 30 seconds into the game before Horton and Krejci made it 3-0 in the first frame.
Brandon Sutter finally gave the fans something to cheer about with 30 seconds left, but Marchand took the air out of the building with a goal just before the first period ended.
Marchand was delighted with his performance and felt his second goal totally deflated the Penguins.
“They were getting some momentum off that goal,” he said. “We did a good job crushing that.”
There was no scoring in the second period before Bergeron and Boychuck added insult to injury with a goal each to make it 6-1.
The Boston Bruins thrashed the Pittsburgh Penguins to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference final. Can the Pens make a comeback or is this series as good as over?
