Boondock Saints producer Chris Brinker passed away unexpectedly early Friday morning.

The 42-year-old was rushed to a hospital in Marina Del Rey Thursday night after experiencing a sharp pain in his chest, RadarOnline reports. He was later transferred to Kaiser’s Los Angeles Medical Center.

“He went for surgery at 4 a.m. this morning and they were unable to fix the extensive damage he suffered from having an aortic aneurysm,” Brinker’s brother, Michael, told RadarOnline . “It took him too long to get to a cardiac surgeon. He went into multi-system failure. He basically bled internally and his intestines and organs were starved from oxygen.”

Michael Brinker said the aneurysm was unexpected and that his brother was “completely unaware” of it.

The Brinker brothers were wrapping up their latest project, Whiskey Bay, when the chest pain started.

“Chris came up to me and said, ‘I don’t feel right,” Brinker said.

Chris Brinker was set to be presented the inaugural Robert Smalls Indie Vision Award at the 7th annual Beaufort International Film Festival next week. The award was to be presented Academy Award nominee and Emmy Winner Tom Berenger.

Whiskey Bay , Brinker’s last film, is about a cop who infiltrates a criminal organization after taking down a contract killer. The film, which is set in 1983 and marked Brinker’s directorial debut, is inspired by true events.

Kevin Chapman, who plays Det. Fusco on CBS’s Person of Interest and has worked with Brinker on Whiskey Bay and Boondock Saints , tweeted:
