Boko Haram has been blamed for the midnight massacre that killed dozens of students at the College of Agriculture, Gujba.
According to The Inquisitr , the Boko Haram group is a militant Isl?mic jihadist sect in the region, formally known under a name that translates to “The Congregation of the People of Tradition for Proselytism and Jihad.”
The group, Boko Haram , is said to translate more closely to “Western Education is sinful” according to ABC Online . Other translations include “Western Education is Forbidden.”
According to Time , Boko Haram is terrorist organization that claims links not only to Al Qaeda, but other groups of similar beliefs.
ABC Online reported that the group consider all who do not follow its strict ideology as infidels. “Whether they are Christian or Muslim, and they demand the adoption of Sharia law in all of Nigeria.”
The report continued on to say that the groups attacks have focused on targets including children, students, teachers, and other civilians.
In their most recent attack on Nigerian students, the Boko Haram group targeted the College of Agriculture in the town of Gujba.
According to The Inquisitr , 40 students were confirmed dead — but as many as 78 may have been killed, with many more listed as missing.
Some bodies reportedly were found decapitated and one witness told news agencies that her classmates were killed in large groups:
“They started gathering students into groups outside, then they opened fire and killed one group and then moved onto the next group and killed them. It was so terrible.”
ABC Online pointed out that this wasn’t the first attack on Nigerian students.
ABC Online and The Inquisitr both reported on the July attack in the town of Mamudo , which killed over 40 students.
According to The Inquisitr, Boko Haram Islamist gunmen attacked a secondary school in Nigeria, killing at least 42 people, many of them children who were shot and burned alive.
Boko Haram attacks are not isolated to students and schools, and North-east Nigeria remains under a state of emergency which was imposed on May 14 because of terrorist attacks according to ABC Online.
