This week is the starting point of the new Bluetooth 5 and it is set to bring upgrades from the previous versions.
According to Information Week , the new Bluetooth 5 will provide twice the transfer speed and about four times the range when it comes to the speed of wireless standard.
The goal of Bluetooth 5 improvements is to “accelerate industries such as industrial automation, smart infrastructure, smart homes and location-based services.”
The Bluetooth 5 is set to launch this coming June 16 at the Discover Blue event in London. This is the next upgrade after Bluetooth 4.2.
In a statement from Bluetooth SIG Executive Director Mark Powell, he noted they are at a stage where they are assessing and planning for the next part of the year. They are setting a new stage for the horizon of Bluetooth.
As we prepare to share those accomplishments and plans with the SIG board of directors at their upcoming June meeting in Tokyo, I’d like to share with you an exciting update on the future of Bluetooth.”
Powell added that the decision to make it Bluetooth 5 came from a reference to their previous Bluetooth version. At the same time, it will be a better marketing message to the consumers.
“Our new naming approach is focused on simplifying our marketing, communicating user benefits more effectively and making it easier to signal significant technology updates to the market.”
Aside from the upgraded specs specified above, the Bluetooth 5 will also provide a seamless connection-less service to location-relevant information and navigation.
“By adding significantly more capacity to advertising transmissions, Bluetooth 5 will further propel the adoption and deployment of beacons and location-based services to users around the world. It’s a great story and one we’re looking forward to telling from our upcoming media event in London on 16 June.”
Bluetooth and the Internet of Things (IoT)
As the consumer and business markets move to the integration of Bluetooth and IoT, some businesses are still in the early stages of rolling out IoT.
Because of the massive scale of IoT, it is important for Bluetooth to be able to create a secure network for everyone. Because of the threats to enterprise-level IoT users, there are several issues when it comes to making sure everything is sorted out in the security department.
However, there are successful companies who have gone beyond the security threat for IoT just like HP Enterprises who have used its Universal Internet of Things Platform to “capture, convert, and analyze large quantities of data.”
“With the HPE Universal IoT Platform customers acquire an industry, vertical, and client-agnostic solution with maximum scalability, modularity, and versatility. This enables customers to manage their IoT solutions and deliver value through monetizing the vast amount of data generated by connected devices and making it available to enterprise-specific applications. Further, use cases both within a vertical industry sector and across multiple others enable new business models and revenue streams.”
HP’s IoT solutions can provide a federation for device and service management. It also offers solutions for data acquisition and exposure.
The platform provides agnostic support for smart ecosystems and can be deployed on premises as well as in any cloud environment for a comprehensive as-a-Service model.
HP Enterprises is already utilizing IoT in most of their platforms like the HPE Connected Car, the HPE Smart City, HPE Smart Metering, and HPE Smart Lighting.
Moving forward, Bluetooth aims to increase their production of about 3 billion devices shipped every year as they integrate new updates in their systems.
