A sequel to Blade Runner is apparently moving forward.
The follow-up to Ridley Scott’s acclaimed science fiction flick has been in the works for quite some time now. However, it would appear that the project is finally starting to come together.
According to The Hollywood Reporter , Michael Green is in talks to pen the long-awaited follow-up. Green’s previous credits include Green Lantern , The Fantastic Four , and The Flash . If all goes according to plan, then Scott will return to direct the sequel.
Hampton Fancher, who is responsible for penning the original Blade Runner script, reportedly put together the initial draft of the sequel. However, Green will handle scripting duties on the project going forward.
Variety explains that Alcon Entertainment has been putting the follow-up together since 2011. Ridley Scott and Hampton Fancher originally envisioned Blade Runner as a series of films back in the 80s. However, the film’s lackluster reception during its original theatrical release derailed these plans.
The film would later develop a strong cult following, which allowed Scott to recut the film several times for home video. The definition version of the flick was released a few years ago on Blu-ray and DVD.
Blade Runner found Harrison Ford starring as a police officer — referred to as a “blade runner” — whose job is hunt down genetically engineered androids known as “replicants.” Rutger Hauer and Daryl Hannah co-starred alongside Ford in the original film.
The sequel will reportedly take place several years after the events in the first movie. The backdrop will be a dystopian version of Los Angeles. However, it’s unlikely that Harrison Ford will reprise his role for the upcoming sequel.
Green has recently been the go-to guy for rewrites. He also helped out with the script for Robopocalyse and Gods and Kings . The scribe also has a number of small screen projects under his belt as well. His credits include Everwood , The River , and Heroes .
