If the Piano Man has his way, moving vans will soon be pulling up to the lavish Billy Joel mansion in Florida, as he apparently is taking his talents from Miami Beach.
Grammy winning superstar musician Billy Joel, who turns 63 today, has listed his 8, 881 square foot waterfront mansion on the exclusive La Gorce Island gated community for $14.75 million. Joel apparently bought the Miami Beach property for $13.5 million in 2006 in a cash transaction when he was still married to the original Top Chef host Katie Lee .
The property is definitely not a fixer-upper.
According to the RealEstalker blog , which broke the story, the Billy Joel mansion built in 2004 “contains a total of 7 bedrooms and 8.5 bathrooms,” along with a outdoor summer kitchen, a chef’s kitchen, formal living and dining rooms, a built-in wet bar (with wine cellar), 150 feet of waterfront access with a boat dock, two two-car garages, and various other amenities.
Some of Joel’s neighbors on La Gorce Island included Shakira, Cher, Lil’ Wayne, and Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees.
Given the difficulties in the real estate market in general (which may even affect high-rolling celebrities), it remains to be seen if someone can pony up the cash for the Mediterranean Revival-style mansion anytime soon.
The real estate market in general has been suffering at all levels. While still together, Joel and Katie Lee reportedly acquired a bunch of expensive East Coast properties, not all of which proved to be good investments.
Joel is a six-time Grammy award winner (nominated 23 times) who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
It will be interesting to see if the Billy Joel mansion stays on the market for that asking price or interested parties will instead make counteroffers.
