Bill Parcells To Coach The Saints? Sean Payton Reaches Out To Mentor

The New Orleans Saints are currently without a head coach. Sean Payton may try to appeal his one year suspension for the team’s “bounty program” but in the mean time New Orleans has to find someone to fill Payton’s shoes. That man could be Bill Parcells.

Payton served as the assistant head coach under Parcells with the Dallas Cowboys from 20003 to 2005. Parcells has become a mentor to Payton and the two have stayed in close contact since Payton took over the head coaching job at New Orleans in 2006. ESPN reports that the two have recently been talking about possible solutions for the 2012 season. Several league sources have reported that the two have talked about Parcells becoming the interim coach for the 2012 season.

It’s unclear, however, if Payton and Parcells are the only people in on the conversation. The former Dallas coach said that he had not talked to the Saints organization, including Saints owner Tom Benson or general manager Mickey Loomis, about taking a job in New Orleans.

A source close to Parcells said:

“As a friend of Sean’s and a football guy, I’m sure he’d consider it but they’re talking about a lot of things. In the end, I don’t think it would happen. It makes sense but it’s complicated.”

According to ESPN , the New Orleans Saints may not bring on Parcells but they are going to have to bring on someone. Current offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. said that he would rather keep his current job, offensive line coach Aaron Kromer said he isn’t going to seek out the head coaching job, and Steve Spagnuolo is already overwhelmed with taking over the defense.

Payton could still try to reduce his one year suspension. Payton’s agent said that “no decisions have been made about an appeal.”
