Big Hero 6 crushed popular movie Interstellar at the box office over the weekend, making $56.2 million over the past three days.

This is not the first time Big Hero 6 has been in the news recently. According to an earlier report from the Inquisitr , the movie introduces Disney kids to Marvel’s universe.

IMDb describes Big Hero 6 as “[t]he special bond that develops between plus-sized inflatable robot Baymax, and prodigy Hiro Hamada, who team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes.”

The film has an 8.5/10 on the website. Interstellar , on the other hand, was rated at 9.1/10. Big Hero 6 won higher reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, however, getting a 91 percent when compared to Interstellar’s 73 percent.

Christopher Nolan’s film is described as follows.

“A group of explorers make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.”

The film premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival on October 23 and at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival in 3D on October 31. It was released in the United States on November 7, 2014.

Over the weekend, Big Hero 6 racked up $56.2 million in over 3,761 locations across North America. The other popular movie, Interstellar , earned about $50 million. Both movies had a budget of around $165 million.

“It’s a testament to the perfectly counterprogrammed lineup, that two openers chasing two very different audiences paid off for both films, because both were able to grab their respective audiences without cannibalizing each other,” says Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Rentrak.

And as the holiday season gets underway, “both of these films have long-term playability. More often than not, it’s the family animated film that is Goliath with the competition playing David.”

The other three movies that make up the top five were horror film Ouija David Fincher’s Gone Girl , and Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler .

This is only the beginning of the race between Big Hero 6 and Interstellar . There is still plenty of time for either movie to earn huge profits, considering the fact that the movies haven’t even premiered in some countries yet. We will have to wait and see which movies comes out on top.
