The best horror movies still to come in 2016 include the long awaited final installment of Phantasm . As horror fans know, Angus Scrimm (who played the Tall Man in The Phantasm movies) passed away on January 9, 2016, at the age of 89. But before the horror icon passed, he completed Phantasm: Ravager , cementing his legacy and leaving a gift behind for horror fans everywhere. Angus Scrimm is truly missed by horror audiences and will forever be considered a legend.
Phantasm: Ravager is the fifth movie in this horror franchise and it features the original cast: A. Michael Baldwin, Reggie Bannister, Bill Thornbury, Kathy Lester, and Angus Scrimm. Though produced and co-written by Don Coscarelli, the originator and writer behind Phantasm , this marks the first picture in the franchise that he didn’t direct. Variety reported more information on the horror movie .
“David Hartman, whose previous credits include various animated TV series, has assumed the directorial duties from franchise creator Coscarelli, who remains on board as co-writer and producer. The movie reportedly was shot in fits and starts over a period of years, which could explain why ‘Phantasm: Ravager’ often resembles a patchwork quilt of outtakes from its four predecessors”
The article would go on to say that there is still room for further additions to the series. Only time will tell if Phantasm will continue or not, but with this being Scrimm’s final role as the Tall Man, Phantasm: Ravager will always be historic. The film will be released in select theaters and by digital HD on October 7, 2016.
In additional horror news, there is a new Halloween film in the works. What makes this so special, is that the Halloween mastermind John Carpenter is an executive producer. Halloween is one of the most iconic horror movies ever created. The late Roger Ebert explained why this is one of the best horror movies of all-time.
“An absolutely merciless thriller, a movie so violent and scary that, yes, I would compare it to ‘Psycho’ (1960). It’s a terrifying and creepy film about what one of the characters calls Evil Personified. Right…
“We see movies for a lot of reasons. Sometimes we want to be amused. Sometimes we want to escape. Sometimes we want to laugh, or cry, or see sunsets. And sometimes we want to be scared. I’d like to be clear about this. If you don’t want to have a really terrifying experience, don’t see ‘Halloween.’”
Since the original was released in 1978, there have been nine movies to follow. Eight of those movies featured Michael Myers, Halloween III made a great mistake by going in a different direction, and two of those films include the Rob Zombie reboots. The two movies by Rob Zombie were panned by critics and received mixed reviews from horror fans. As BloodyDisgusting reported, John Carpenter commented on the new Halloween movie saying, “38 years after the original Halloween . I’m going to help to try to make the 10th sequel the scariest of them all.”
If anyone can do that, it’s the horror master John Carpenter. Not that it matters to fans, but the only Halloween film to receive rave reviews was the original. But with Carpenter on-board, this movie could be huge. It is rumored to be released in 2017.
Halloween, Halloween IV , and Halloween V are all being re-released in theaters this October just in time for—well—Halloween. The official website for the horror franchise reports that there will also be an “exclusive interview and retrospective with the legendary director [Carpenter].”
