Although DC Comics has a slew of movies scheduled to be released in the next five years, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , Suicide Squad , Wonder Woman , The Flash , and Justice League , Slash Film is reporting that a sequel to Man of Steel may be on “permanent hold.”
This new bit of information comes after Jon Schnepp, who directed a documentary titled the Death of Superman Lives , recently told Popcorn Talk that “George Miller is doing Man of Steel 2. ” That being said, it still isn’t clear if and when Miller will decide to move forward with the sequel.
Despite the news that Miller is on board to head up the project, Den of Geek is reporting that Miller’s involvement with DC Comics doesn’t necessarily mean he will be doing Man of Steel 2 first. In fact, Miller is currently in talks with Warner Bros. about him taking the reigns on all future DC Comics films, which opens the door for other stories to pursue.
Although this doesn’t mean Miller won’t jump in right away and start Man of Steel 2 , whatever he chooses to do first really will depend on his personal feelings and which story appeals to him the greatest.
With that in mind, another factor that hurts the chances of Man of Steel 2 getting off the ground is that executives at the studio seem to want to move forward with more Batman movies than anything else.
In fact, as was previously reported by Den of Geek , Warner Bros. was so impressed by the private screening of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that they want to make even more standalone movies about the caped crusader.
An inside source close to the matter told the outlet that executives watched “a near finished cut but not locked,” and afterward gave the film a “standing ovation.”
Although Ben Affleck is already slated to appear and direct the next standalone movie on Batman, Warner Bros. is preparing to make a deal with him for the following 10 years.
“Basically, Warners are now working their movie universe around Ben’s Batman,” the source revealed.
If more Batman movies are on the way, then this will certainly hurt any chance Man of Steel 2 might have in being released in the next few years. Still, nothing official has been announced, and we’ll have to wait and see what unfolds with Miller before anything concrete is determined.
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opens March 25, 2016.
