The Gallimimus was added to the PC version of ARK: Survival Evolved via the recent patch 233 . The speedy dinosaur is not a rare find, but is fairly special when it comes to taming and its uses.
Where to find the Gallimimus
ARK players can find the Gallimumus plentifully in the southern zones of the island around all three South spawn zone areas. This includes the Southern Islets, South East Shores, and Drayo’s Cove. They’ve also been spotted around the Grand Peak and Maw areas.
Taming
Taming the Gallimimus is tricky because of its low health and extreme speed. Using a high damage weapon such as a crossbow or bow with Tranq Arrows can kill them instead of knocking them out. A Tranq Dart with a Longneck Rifle is your best bet at bringing the creature down without killing it.
The problem is the Gallimimus will take off like a bolt after the first shot, making it nearly impossible to get in the additional shots needed to take it out if it is allowed to roam freely. For example, a level 16 to 20 requires three to four Tranq Darts. Chasing one can result in running straight into the teeth of any of the many carnivores that roam the different areas of the island.
The best knock out strategy is to either have a team of two or more players ready to shoot at the same time, corner it, trap it, or all of the above. Using the Quetzal to capture it and hold it works as well. Note that an Argentavis is not capable of picking up the Gallimimus.
Additional challenges with taming the Gallimimus arise from its high Torpor recovery of several points per second. A large amount of Narcotics or Narcoberries will be needed to keep dino unconscious.
Taming food includes Mejoberry, Longrass, and Kibble made from a Dimetrodon Egg. You can save the Kibble for very high-level versions of the Gallimimus as the tame time with Mejoberry is not exceedingly long. Use the taming calculator at Survive Ark for the exact amount of food and Narcotic needed.
Usage
Craft the Gallimimus Saddle in the Smithy using 240 Hide, 160 Fiber, 120 Wood, and 25 Metal Ingots to carry three players at the same time. This dino can be used as a fast scout/raider and not much more. It’s at the bottom of the list when it comes to fighting and resource gathering, plus its base carry weight is extremely low.
However, it will outrun all carnivores in the game and is capable of out-pacing the Procoptodon. The driver rides in the middle seat while the other two riders can sit in the front and rear equipped kitted with ranged or melee weapons. This makes up for the Gallimimus’ lack of offensive capabilities as it can simply run circles around everything else while the humans deal the damage.
Leveling
Speed, Weight, and Stamina should be the primary focus when leveling up the Gallimimus. Weight should be considered too as it needs to be able to carry three humans plus their gear.
Dossier
- Wild : When someone asks me what the fastest creatures on the island are, Gallimimus is always a contender. Unlike the island’s many armored animals, Gallimimus eschews strong defenses for the ability to outrun pretty much anything.
- Domesticated : There are two general camps on the use of tamed Gallimimus . One camp thinks that their inability to actually harm hostile creatures, and their inability to harvest most resources, makes them primarily a burden to the tribe. The other camp thinks that their extreme speed and ability to jump long distances is among the best for scouting and exploring — or just making a quick getaway!
- Known Information : A skittish herbivore, Gallimimus even looks nervous when eating in a peaceful clear meadow. Having no real way to harm predators, it simply runs away and uses its ability to stay safe. I’ve even seen wild Gallimimus outrun speed-trained Utah raptors!
