Recently, President Barack Obama made a statement on the Orlando shooting, calling it “terrorism.” However, Obama angered conservatives, especially right-wingers, as they claim he used the tragedy as a platform to push gun control.
According to CBS News , Barack Obama addressed the nation for the 20th time following the aftermath of the shooting that took place early Sunday morning in Orlando, Florida, at a gay nightclub. Obama discussed the massacre of 50 people, with even more injured, in which the numbers make it the deadliest mass shooting in American history.
“The shooter was apparently armed with a handgun and a powerful assault rifle. [The massacre served as a] further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school, or in a house of worship, or a movie theater, or in a nightclub.
We have to decide if that’s the kind of country we want to be. And to actively do nothing is a decision as well.”
Many other politicians ranging from Senators to Congressmen, primarily those who are Left Wingers, sided with Barack Obama. Many of them feel that the push for gun control is at a standstill blaming the indecision of both chambers of the Legislative Branch. Chris Murphy, Democratic Senator of Connecticut, was one of the more vocal politicians pertaining to the lack of gun reform.
“This doesn’t have to happen but this epidemic will continue without end if Congress continues to sit on its hands and do nothing — again.”
Not everyone are on board with Barack Obama in pushing gun control. In fact, there are many, mostly conservatives, who are outright angry. As mentioned earlier, many of them claim Obama used the Orlando shooting as a platform for gun control. Instead, conservatives believe the real reason behind the shooting has to do with radical Islamic terrorism.
One such conservative is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump. According to CNN Politics, Trump claimed that Obama was too timid in his White House appearance, bringing up that Obama refusedto use the words “Radical Islam” in accordance to the fact that the Islamic State (ISIS)is taking credit for the shooting.
“President Obama disgracefully refused to even say the words ‘Radical Islam.’ For that reason alone, he should step down. If Hillary Clinton, after this attack, still cannot say the two words ‘Radical Islam’ she should get out of this race for the Presidency.”
In a follow-up by Mad World News , the report emphasizes that radical Islam is why the suspect, Omar Mir Seddique Mateen, committed a mass shooting at Pulse, killing 50 in his wake. Some points that really stand out include the National Rifle Association and guns do not follow an ideology but in the Quran and Hadith, Islam commands the killing of gay people. They utilize the quotes in Abu Dawud (4462 and 4448), Bukhari (72:774), and al-Tirmidhi, Sunan 1:152 as references.
The report also emphasizes that the gay nightclub Pulse is recognized as a gun-free zone. As a result, the report claims the Democratic policy made the victims “sitting ducks” without any way for them to defend themselves. It is also brought up the belief that if gun control laws were put into effect, it would not matter to someone like Omar Mir Seddique Mateen, as both terrorism and murder are illegal yet it didn’t stop Mateen from doing what he did.
Ultimately, the situation has become a sensitive subject given the fact the Orlando shooting was the second tragedy involving murder with a firearm. Earlier in the week, Christina Grimmie , popular for her participation on The Voice , was shot while meeting fans. Two shootings in the same place happening in such a short amount of time and making international news is enough to cause tension among Americans.
