Andy Reid is the new coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.
After rumors began circulating Thursday that Reid was in negotiations with the team to succeed Romeo Crennel as head coach, the Chiefs finished the deal Friday, league sources told ESPN .
The move came after the Chiefs and general manager Scott Pioli agreed to part ways.
One of the most sought-after coaches in an offseason full of coaching vacancies, Andy Reid didn’t last long on the market. The Philadelphia Eagles coach was fired shortly after the season ended, completing a 13-season tenure with the team in which he won 130 regular-season game and 10 playoff games. During that time Reid led the team to four NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl.
Reid’s deal comes shortly after the Chiefs and general manager Scott Pioli mutually agreed to part ways. He joined the Chiefs in 2009 after helping to build the New England Patriots dynasty, but failed to turn around the Chiefs.
“I would like to thank Norma, Clark and the Hunt family for the opportunity that they gave me four years ago,” Pioli said. “I’d also like to thank the players, coaches, scouts and countless other employees, throughout the organization and at Arrowhead Stadium that have worked so hard during my time here. I would also like to genuinely thank Chiefs fans.
“The bottom line is that I did not accomplish all of what I set out to do. To the Hunt family to the great fans of the Kansas City Chiefs to the players, all employees and alumni, I truly apologize for not getting the job done.”
Pioli was part of a Chiefs season that ended in tragedy. He and Crennel were present when linebacker Jovan Belcher committed suicide at the team’s practice facility in December.
The Chiefs are expected to officially announce Andy Reid as head coach once contract negotiations are completed, NFL.com reported .
