Amy Robach has announced that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The diagnosis came after she received an on-air mammogram during an episode of Good Morning America .
The mammogram was the idea of a GMA producer. At the age of 40, Robach never had the diagnostic procedure, and was not interested in having it done. However, as a breast cancer survivor, colleague Robin Roberts urged her to agree to the test. Roberts said “if one life is saved, it’s worth it.”
Although she was hesitant to have the procedure on live television, Robach finally agreed. The mammogram was performed during GMA’s Pink Day, in an effort to raise awareness about breast cancer . Her decision to submit to the testing may have saved her life.
On this morning’s broadcast, Amy Robach revealed that she has breast cancer and will undergo a double mastectomy. As reported by CNN , she said she hopes her story will encourage others “to get a mammogram, to take a self exam.” She points out that there are “no excuses… it is the difference between life and death .”
The Huffington Post reports that Robach thanked Roberts for encouraging her to have the procedure:
“Thank God you did…I had cancer the whole time we were sitting in that office, and I said, I don’t have any connection to that disease… You saved my life.”
