Adam Levine took a moment during the recent Television Critics Association (TCA) panel to address the “stupid media hype” surrounding the controversial comment he made earlier this year.
The Maroon 5 singer landed in hot water after a hot mic picked up his “I hate this country” remark during an episode of The Voice back in May. Levine was clearly frustrated by voting results on the program, and he decided to express his feelings on the subject.
Although making such a comment was probably not the smartest thing to do, Adam Levine said the attention the remark garnered from numerous media outlets only made the problem that much worse.
“If your intentions are good, if someone misunderstands you, regardless of what the scenario is, I think people can see through stupid media hype — no offense,” the singer explained during the The Voice panel .
He continued, “As long as you allow yourself to be who you are, you can’t really defend every single thing you say.”
The backlash to the comment was immediate. People quickly took to social media and demanded that NBC fire the singer from the singing competition. This prompted the singer to issue an official apology.
“I obviously love my country very much and my comments last night were made purely out of frustration. Being a part of The Voice, I am passionately invested in my team and want to see my artists succeed,” he explained in a statement.
During the panel at TCA, Levine also discussed why The Voice hasn’t produced a breakout star . According to the singer, it really boils down to what you consider successful.
“There’s been a lot of success depending on how you define the term success. If you’re not in the negative in this business, you’re succeeding. The immediacy of winning and becoming a huge star is a fairy tale that I’d love to see take place, but it’s still a fairy tale,” he explained.
Are you a fan of Adam Levine ? Do you agree that “stupid media hype” was responsible for blowing his comment completely out of proportion?
