A Good Day to Die Hard has topped the holiday weekend box office.
The latest installment in the Die Hard franchise brought in an estimated $24.9 million over the past three days. When combined with the $8.3 million the flick made on Thursday, this brings its domestic haul to around $33 million. This number isn’t too shabby for a series that made its debut back in 1988.
A Good Day to Die Hard finds Bruce Willis reprising his role as John McClane, a New York City cop who has survived a total of five motion pictures in roughly 25 years. The latest installment finds the iconic hero traveling to Europe to fight bad guys with his son (Jai Courtney).
According to The Wall Street Journal , director Len Wiseman’s 2007 effort Live Free or Die Hard earned $33 million on opening weekend.
Although $24.9 million certainly a tidy sum, the film has only recovered a little over a third of its estimated $92 million production budget when Thursday’s numbers are taken into consideration. When foreign totals are added to the mix, A Good Day to Die Hard earned a total of $44 million at the box office.
Director Lasse Hallstrom’s Nicholas Sparks adaptation Safe Haven also opened in theaters this weekend. The latest romance from the award-winning author of The Notebook brought in $21.4 million over three days. The film stars Julianne Hough, Josh Duhamel, and Cobie Smulders.
Deadline is reporting that the second place position belonged to the Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy flick Identify Thief . Although it didn’t connect with critics, audiences seem to adore the raunchy comedy. The film raked in around $23 million over the course of the weekend. Although the film dropped around $13 million from last weekend, it would seem director Seth Gordon’s movie has legs.
This weekend’s three-day totals are below.
1. Good Day To Die Hard – $24.9 million 2. Identity Thief – $23.4 million 3. Safe Haven – $21.5 million 4. Escape From Planet Earth $15.8 million 5. Warm Bodies $9.1 million 6.
