Could a black James Bond ever actually happen? Ian Fleming always envisioned Bond as a white British spy, but Idris Elba would love to take the job if the movie studios would have him for the role.
In a related report by The Inquisitr , when Marvel recently introduced a female Thor , speculation began that eventually Chris Hemsworth might find himself “unworthy” of continuing the role of the leading main man in the movies. There’s already some actresses saying they’d love to be the mighty goddess of thunder . But so far the leaked Thor 3 plot details seem to indicate Hemsworth won’t have to adopt a falsetto voice any time soon.
Idris Elba participated in an “Ask Me Anything” Q&A session on Reddit this weekend, and at one point one Reddit user asked, “If it were offered to you, would you be the next James Bond?”
Elba answered, “Yes, if it was offered to me, absolutely.”
Most Reddit users seemed to think Elba was joking when he made that response, but at least one James Bond fan took the idea seriously. The problem is, by time Daniel Craig retires from the James Bond series, even Elba might be too old.
“Unfortunately, I think he’ll be too old by the time Craig hangs up the PPK. The producers will be looking for someone in their mid 30’s at the oldest. I do think Idris is Connery like, though. He’s big and powerful and exudes (and I say this with a long record of heterosexuality) raw sexual energy the way Connery did.”
The idea of a black James Bond is not that far-fetched. Other fictional characters have been turned from white to black with great success in the past. For example, Nick Fury was always a white S.H.I.E.L.D. spy in the comics, but everyone loves Samuel L. Jackson as Fury in the movies. There was even talk of Denzel Washington being cast as a black Lex Luthor before Jesse Eisenberg was handed the role in Batman Vs. Superman . To prove the point, the Asgardian character Heimdall was always white in the comics, and probably was white in Norse myths, but Idris Elba did a great job in the role, and would probably make a great Green Lantern.
Fans seem divided on the issue based upon social comments. In general, some people object to the casting of previously white characters as black because it’s untrue to the original source material, and a betrayal of the original vision for the characters. But some would welcome a black James Bond, while others think the only reason it would happen is due to political correctness. Other believe that creating a new black super spy character would be more appropriate.
Do you think a black James Bond should be created in the future?
