MTV has renewed its reality series Catfish: The TV Show for a second season, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The series is a spinoff of the 2010 movie of the same name. The film followed young photographer Yaniv “Nev” Schulman as he tried to build a relationship with a young woman he met on Facebook who may or may not be who she says she is. The TV show follows a similar premise and focuses on helping couples who have entered into online relationships by performing background checks and other research. Each episode follows a different couple with a different story.
MTV Multiplatform EVP Dave Sirulnick said in a statement :
“ Catfish: The TV Show has truly captured the zeitgeist of the digital dating age. The show has resonated with our audience by portraying the real life journeys of individuals trying to navigate the highs and lows of online dating — an experience our viewers can relate to. We are thrilled to bring the show back for a second season, and look forward to the fascinating stories that only Nev and Max (Joseph, a filmmaker) can uncover.”
The first season of Catfish has performed well in the ratings. The 11 pm premiere on November 12 was MTV’s highest rated ever for that time period, and its 10 pm airings are regularly among cable’s top five Monday shows in the 18-49 demographic.
The Monday, December 17 episode received a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic, as well as 2.7 million viewers.
New episodes of Catfish: The TV Show will start airing on January 7, 2013. So far, there is no episode count for the second season.
