Marketing ploy or exclusive club, the 11k Club is attempting to go viral by offering exclusive access to only 11,000 members regardless of how many actually apply. As of today, they are showing over 13,000 applications with literally no explanation for what people could actually be applying for.
In an email to The Inquisitr this morning, the 11k Club stated the following.
“In 1 month, we’re going to set members a challenge. You just don’t know what it is, nor do you know what you are signing up for. All we can say is that the club is exclusive, highly exclusive. For now you have a choice, take the Red Pill and the story ends and you’ll never experience the highs that being in this club will bring. Take The Blue Pill and you’ll stay in wonderland and we’ll show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.”
It definitely sounds tempting. In a follow up email to Mashable , the founder was quoted as saying the following:
“I’m trying to see if people will sign up to a club that they know nothing about purely because it’s exclusive and because they fear they’ll miss out. What 11K Club is proving, at least in our minds, is that it almost doesn’t matter what your site does, how it looks, what the homepage says.”
Well, Steve is most certainly going to build an interesting email list at the least; the question is how viral will he manage to make it. The idea for the project came to him after having to restrict user access to a social bookmarking site he was managing. Soon after restricting access, the demand to gain access began to flow through the site.
“People wanted to sign up because they couldn’t sign up — they thought it was exclusive (which it wasn’t) and therefore wanted to join.”
Well, it has definitely got my interest piqued enough to see if i can gain membership to the 11k Club! Are you going to try? Registration ends at the end of this month!
