Nina Dobrev will reportedly make her way back to The Vampire Diaries in Season 8, and reunite onscreen with her former off-screen love Ian Somerhalder.
While fans wait for the premiere of the show’s final season, Dobrev will allegedly reprise her role as Elena Gilbert in the season finale. How did Somerhalder react to the news?
According to Parent Herald , Dobrev’s appearance on The Vampire Diaries could lead to a special cameo and extended stay on The Originals .
The Originals has been struggling to gain viewers over the past year and Dobrev’s involvement could boost ratings significantly.
Will Julie Plec bring Dobrev back to save The Originals from cancellation? Dobrev last appeared on The Vampire Diaries back in Season 6.
Her character, Elena, was forced into a deep sleep that will ultimately allow her to return this season. Although Dobrev cited a need for change as the reason behind her departure, she left the show shortly after her romance with Somerhalder ended.
Speaking of Somerhalder, it isn’t clear if his character will end up with Elena in the series finale.
Many fans pulled for Damon and Elena to get together on the show, but Hall of Fame Magazine is reporting that Somerhalder doesn’t think a happy ending is in the cards .
“This poor young girl from this tiny town, she lost everyone she has ever loved, she burned her house down, she is now in a box,” Somerhalder explained in an interview with TV Line . “These guys have ruined her life, yet everybody wants her to end up with one of them.”
Meanwhile, Somerhalder was embroiled in controversy this past summer after reports surfaced that his wife, Nikki Reed , didn’t want him working with Dobrev ever again. Reed was allegedly jealous that Ian Somerhalder’s romance with Dobrev would spark back up if their characters reunited on screen.
The jealousy rumors led to reports that Somerhalder’s marriage was in trouble.
Now that Dobrev’s involvement has been confirmed, it sounds like Reed has moved on and is willing to allow her husband to work with Dobrev on Season 8.
It still isn’t clear how Plec and her team of writers plan on bringing Elena back into the fold, and iTech Post reports that Season 8 will focus on Damon and Enzo’s (Michael Malarkey) battle with an evil spirit.
In a special preview clip for the new season, Damon is shown talking to his brother about the prospects of him getting out of his predicament alive.
“This is it. This is the beginning of the end,” Damon explains. “You can’t save me.”
Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) will do his best to track down and save Damon at all costs. Fortunately, Stefan will have a little help along the way.
Caroline (Candice King) agreed to help Stefan, though, sadly, no hints of a romance between the two were shown in the sneak peek.

At the same time, Bonnie (Kat Graham), will also join the team on the hunt for Damon and Alonzo.
“Whatever we need to do, I’m in,” Bonnie, who is living without her supernatural powers, tells the crew.
While Damon is certain that he and Enzo will die, his friend isn’t so sure that the entity will kill them until it gets whatever it wants.
“When does this end?” he is shown asking Damon. “How many more bodies until you’re full?”
Hopefully, Stefan, Bonnie, and Caroline can figure out a solution and save Damon before it’s too late.
Somerhalder has not commented on Dobrev’s return to the show.
Fans can watch Somerhalder reunite with Dobrev when the eighth and final season of The Vampire Diaries premieres on Oct. 21 on The CW, watch the entire cast say goodbye in the clip below.
