The Boston Marathon explosion is under investigation by an array of federal and state law enforcement agencies, and at this stage there is still a lot of understandable confusion in this unfolding situation.
There were two explosions near the Boston Marathon finish line at about 3 pm this afternoon.
Federal law enforcement is considering it a terrorist incident. According to the Boston Globe , about 100 persons are being treated in area hospitals after the Marathon explosions. Two persons are said to have died.
According some reports, a suspect reportedly responsible for the Boston Marathon explosions has been identified and is being guarded in a Boston hospital with shrapnel wounds. Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said today that as yet no individual or group has taken responsibility for attack. As for the possible terror connection, David said today that “We’re not being definitive… but you can reach your own conclusions.”
Apparently about 17,000 runners finished the race before the explosions, and the others were stopped or diverted by police from the marathon route.
The Boston Herald talked to runners who had just crossed the finish line as well as spectators on the scene when the blasts occurred: One of them had this to say:
‘Runners who had just finished their 26.2-mile ordeal, already on the verge of collapse, were stunned and shocked by the explosions that rocked the finish line this afternoon.
“I was just finished and collecting my medal when it went off … Then the next one went off 10 seconds later. I saw flames on that one. I didn’t see flames on the first one. My wife was at the 25 and a half mark when she was stopped. She had to borrow a cellphone to text me she was alright. This is my first Boston and my 22nd marathon. This was an investment not a cheap adventure. I will remember this, but not for the reasons I want. I will remember this.”
