Director Jose Padilha’s RoboCop reboot will likely be rated PG-13 when it hits theaters next year.
If you were hoping the update of Paul Verhoeven’s 80s classic would retain the film’s squishy gore and over-the-top violence, then you might want to adjust your expectations.
During his chat with the folks at Dread Central , Jose Padilha revealed that he is aiming for a PG-13 rating. In other words, the director and MGM are hoping to make the RoboCop reboot accessible to the coveted teenage demographic.
“We were shooting the movie to be seen by the broadest possible audience, which means PG-13. This whole idea about ‘RoboCop’ has to be R because the first one was amazingly violent. I never really bought into that. You know, ‘The Dark Knight’ was PG-13, so you can get away with a lot,” Padilha explained to the website.
When asked how much time his reboot devotes to RoboCop’s creation, the filmmaker revealed that nearly 30 percent of the feature deals with Alex Murphy’s transformation into the future of law enforcement.
“You’ll see and understand how RoboCop is made from the inside. The idea is, you try to keep the man so he’s an accountable robot. His brain still have memories, emotions, all of the human part. The body is robot,” he explained to Shock Till You Drop .
Padilha also said the RoboCop reboot will deal with how OmniCorp handles the creation of such a product. The director said this is the reason why Alex Murphy is allowed to keep his right hand in the film.
“When they’re building RoboCop, they’re thinking like they would sell a computer from Apple or something. They run focus groups to find out how he looks,” the director explained.
The Killing cast member Joel Kinnaman stars as the title character in the re-imagining. Also on-board for the flick are Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Jay Baruchel, Michael Keaton, Michael Kenneth Williams, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Abbie Cornish, Aimee Garcia, and Jackie Earle Haley.
